After royally screwing this up, I wiped and wiped until not much is left. We'll consider this the background for try number 2.

The great thing about oils is that they're opaque, so you can cover up layers with new layers. A multi-layer piece may well end up being more interesting than a single-layer piece.
Try to resist judging until at least the following day.
Have fun making marks on the canvas! If that shows through in the finished abstract piece, you'll have done well.
